Symptom Guide · Vaginal Discharge
Is my white discharge normal?
Some vaginal discharge is completely normal — it is how the vagina keeps itself clean and healthy. What matters is a change: in amount, colour, smell, or any itching or discomfort that comes with it.
What does normal discharge look like?
Normal discharge is clear to milky white, mild-smelling or odourless, and changes through your cycle — stretchy and egg-white-like around ovulation, thicker at other times. It often increases during pregnancy, sexual arousal, or with hormonal contraception. None of this needs treatment.
When is white discharge a sign of infection?
Thick, white, curd-like discharge with itching or burning usually points to a yeast (fungal) infection. Greyish-white, thin discharge with a fishy smell suggests bacterial vaginosis. Yellow-green, frothy discharge can indicate trichomoniasis. All three are common, easily diagnosed, and treatable — but they need different medicines, so guessing is not a good idea.
Why does my discharge smell?
A mild scent is normal. A strong fishy odour — especially after intercourse — typically indicates bacterial vaginosis, an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria. It is not caused by poor hygiene, and over-washing or using intimate washes often makes it worse by disturbing the natural balance further.
Can I treat discharge with over-the-counter medicines?
Self-treating works only if you guess the cause correctly, and repeated wrong treatment can make infections recur or become resistant. If discharge is recurrent, foul-smelling, blood-stained, or accompanied by itching, pain, or fever, get examined once — a simple check-up usually identifies the cause immediately.
Does white discharge cause weakness?
This is a very common worry, but normal discharge does not cause weakness or harm the body. However, persistent abnormal discharge from an untreated infection can cause discomfort and, in some cases, lead to pelvic infection — which is why a proper diagnosis matters more than tonics or home remedies.
See a doctor promptly if you have

- Strong fishy or foul smell
- Yellow, green, grey, or blood-stained discharge
