Cervical cancer is largely preventable. The HPV vaccine protects against the strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) responsible for most cervical cancers. It is most effective when given before first sexual exposure, but remains beneficial for older women too.
Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?
- Girls aged 9–14 (strongest immune response)
- Young women aged 15–26
- Women up to age 45 (on consultation)
- Boys & men for HPV-related cancer prevention
Vaccine Schedule
- 2-dose schedule: ages 9–14 (0 and 6 months)
- 3-dose schedule: ages 15+ (0, 2, and 6 months)
- Gardasil 9 — protects against 9 HPV strains
- Can be combined with Pap smear schedule
What HPV Vaccine Prevents
- Cervical cancer (most common in India)
- Vaginal and vulvar cancers
- Genital warts
- HPV-related throat and anal cancers
What to Expect
- Brief consultation before vaccination
- 3 injections over 6 months
- Mild arm soreness after injection
- Continue regular Pap smear screenings
Important Note
The HPV vaccine does not replace regular Pap smear screening. Women who have been vaccinated should still have Pap smears every 3–5 years as recommended. Dr. Mazumdar will advise the best screening schedule for you.
