How can I protect myself from HPV?

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common virus which spreads rapidly.

The HPV consists of a group of more than 200 related viruses, some of which are spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Sexually transmitted HPV types may be high risk or low risk types.

The main high risk strains of HPV are HPV 16 and HPV 18 . They cause cancers of the cervix, anus and throat.

Low risk types like the HPV 6 and 11 cause warts on or around the genitals, anus, mouth, or throat.

How can I prevent HPV infection?

There is no specific medicine or cure that kills the virus directly. In about 90% of cases , your own immune system, if strong enough, can clear and kill the HPV virus in the body, in about two years.

But you can definitely take steps to prevent HPV infection andboost your immune system.

How can I prevent HPV infection?

Get Vaccinated :

  • The HPV vaccine is the best way to prevent HPV infection.
  • Even if you already have HPV, the vaccine can still protect against other strains.
  • The HPV Vaccine is best given to preteens aged 11 or 12, but can be started from the age of 9 years.
  • The Vaccine can also be given to adults, if necessary.
  • It is given in a 2 dose schedule if started at age 9 years and as a 3 dose schedule if started after the age of 15 years.

Safe Sex Practices:

  • Condoms and dental dams lower the risk but don’t eliminate it completely.
  • HPV spreads through skin-to-skin contact, so areas not covered by condoms may still be at risk.
  • Limit the number od sexual partners todecrease exposure to the virus.
  • If you or your partner have visible genital warts, avoid direct contact until treated.

Get Regular Screenings

  • Women: Get regular Pap smears and HPV tests to detect early cell changes before they turn into cancer.
  • Men: No standard HPV test, but be aware of symptoms (like warts or throat issues).

Quit Smoking

  1. Smoking weakens the immune system , damages cervical and mucosal cells, making it much harder for your body to fight off HPV.
  2. Studies show that smokers are less likely to get rid of high-risk HPV compared to non-smokers, and the more someone smokes, the greater the risk.
  3. In fact, smoking is the second biggest risk factor for cervical cancer after HPV itself

How can I Boost My Immune System ?

  1. Eat whole foods: Focus on colorful fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains packed with vitamins A, C, E, folate, zinc, and selenium.
  2. Limit processed items: Cut back on added sugars, refined carbs, and processed foods that cause inflammation.
  3. Reduce alcohol: Limit or avoid alcohol, which can suppress your immune system and make it harder to clear the virus.

What Lifestyle Changes should I make?

  • Sleep well: Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to help your immune system repair and function at its best.
  • Manage stress: Long-term stress wears down your immune response. Stress makes it tougher for your body to fight off HPV and may increase the risk of more serious conditions. When you’re stressed, your immune system weakens, making it easier for the virus to persist.
  • Drink fluids – Dehydration lowers the resistance to infection
  • Exercise : Regular exercises improves immunity , decreasesstress and helps to keep you healthy.

What Vitamin Supplements can I take to boost my immune system?

  • No specific vitamin can cure or directly clear human papillomavirus (HPV), but vitamins C, D, and folate (B9) along with vitamin B12 support your immune system and cellular health to help your body clear the virus naturally
  • Vitamin C: Protects cells from oxidative damage and supports white blood cell function.
  • Vitamin D: Regulates immune system responses and prevents viral persistence.
  • Folate (Vitamin B9) & B12: Support healthy DNA function and cervical cell repair. Low levels are linked to a higher risk of persistent HPV.
  • Vitamin A (and Carotenoids): Supports surface tissue and immune defence.
  • Zinc: Helps immune cells grow and fight off infections.

What foods should I take to prevent HPV?

No specific food cures or directly kills the human papillomavirus (HPV), but eating nutrient-rich foods helps your immune system clear the virus naturally. Key items include dark leafy greens, citrus fruits, and colorful vegetables.

  • Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and arugula provide folate and vitamins that support healthy cell growth and DNA repair.
  • Citrus Fruits: Oranges, grapefruits, and lemons deliver high amounts of vitamin C to strengthen white blood cells.
  • Bright Vegetables: Carrots, sweet potatoes, and bell peppers offer beta-carotene and antioxidants to protect cells from damage.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, sunflower seeds, and Brazil nuts supply zinc, selenium, and vitamin E for immune defense.
  • Fatty Fish: Salmon and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce inflammation.

HPV is a very commoninfection. But it is possible to take steps to prevent HPV infection and to boost your immune system to clear the virus after infection.
