Condition · Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are one of the most common reasons for heavy periods, particularly for women in their 30s and 40s. Many need no treatment at all — but the ones causing symptoms are very treatable, and increasingly without open surgery.
Short answer
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the wall of the womb. The commonest sign is heavy periods — soaking a pad every one to two hours, large clots, or bleeding beyond seven days — often with tiredness from low iron. They are found on ultrasound. Many need no treatment; those that do can usually be removed with keyhole surgery.
Non-cancerous growths in the wall of the womb. They are common, particularly for women in their 30s and 40s, and many cause no trouble at all and need no treatment.
The commonest is heavy periods — soaking a pad every one to two hours, passing large clots, or bleeding for more than seven days. Fibroids can also cause pelvic pressure or heaviness, pain, and in some cases difficulty conceiving. Heavy bleeding over time causes low iron, which is why so many women with fibroids feel constantly tired.
A pelvic examination assesses the size of the uterus, and an ultrasound shows the fibroids — how many, how big, and crucially where they sit in the womb. Where the bleeding is excessive, Dr. Mazumdar orders the ultrasound straight away rather than starting with medicine.
No. Many need no treatment at all, and are simply monitored. Treatment is decided by their size, their location, your symptoms, and whether you want children later — not by their existence alone.
Laparoscopically where possible — keyhole surgery, which means less pain, a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and minimal scarring. Fibroids sitting just under the lining of the womb can often be removed hysteroscopically, through the cervix, with no cuts at all. Dr. Mazumdar has performed over 1,500 laparoscopic procedures.
Hysterectomy is one option among several, not the default. It is generally considered where fibroids are large or numerous, symptoms are severe, and you have completed your family. Fibroid removal that preserves the womb is the goal wherever it is appropriate.
At the Clinic
Fibroids are found and sized by examination and a scan, and treatment follows from what that scan shows — not from the fact that fibroids exist.
How many days you bleed for, how heavy it is, how long it has been like this, and whether there is pain, pressure or heaviness with it.
Blood pressure, pulse and weight, then a pelvic examination to assess the size of the uterus and ovaries — an enlarged uterus is often the first indication.
The scan shows how many fibroids there are, how large they are, and crucially where they sit in the womb. Where the blood loss is excessive, the scan is ordered immediately rather than starting with medicine.
A complete blood count shows whether the bleeding has left you anaemic, which is very common and very treatable, alongside thyroid and blood sugar levels.
Size, location, your symptoms and whether you want children later decide between monitoring, medicine, laparoscopic removal, or hysteroscopic removal through the cervix for fibroids sitting under the womb lining.
Having fibroids is not in itself a reason for surgery. Many women are simply monitored. The question is whether yours are causing you problems worth treating.
