Bacterial vaginosis

Hello,

I think I have bacterial vaginosis.  Will this go away on its own?

How soon should I see a doctor?

Mary.

Hello Mary,

Welcome to Aries Obgyn Clinic.

Can I have more details please?

How long have you been concerned about vaginosis?

What symptoms do you have?

 Hi Doctor,

Approximately 1 week.  I have a thin gray discharge and a foul/fishy odor.  Some discomfort in my pelvis area, but no itching or thick discharge.

Mary

Mary,

How old are you?
Are you using any medications?

Do you have regular periods?

Dr. M.D.Mazumdar

I am 36 years old.

Yes, I have regular periods.

I got it last 2 weeks ago.

I take medicines for my blood pressure, metoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide and oxybutynin for my hyperhydrosis.

Dear Mary,

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a condition in which there is growth of unhealthy bacteria in the vagina due to a change in the vaginal acidity (ph).

Generally BV requires antibiotics. However, changing the ph can also help clear mild BV.

Please use Boric acid vaginal suppositories – 600 mg daily for 1 week and then twice  weekly for a month. This will help stabilise the ph and help clear the BV.

Also take  Probiotics like Rephresh tablets.

Take a bowl of yogurts with live bacilli daily.

Wear clean cotton underclothes.

If that does not help, please see a doctor – you will need a prescription for  an antibiotic called Metronidazole

Thank you.

Is that oral probiotics?  Do I need a prescription for boric acid suppositories?

Yes, oral probiotics.

And no you do not need a prescription.  Boric acid suppositories are available without a prescription.

Thank you, Dr. Mazumdar

I will try these out.

Mary.

Thank you for using Aries Obgyn Clinic.
