I am in Menopause and Bleeding Heavily

Menopause Bleeding - What do I do?

Hello Aries Clinic,

I am 52 years old  and I believe entering menopause.   My period skipped for a month but now have been having an incredibly heavy period with major clotting going on 8th day. What can i do?

Thanks,

Jane.

Hello Jane,

Welcome to Aries Obgyn Clinic

May I have more details, please?

  • Have you noticed any other changes in your menstrual cycle recently?
  • Have you experienced heavy periods or clotting before, or is this the first time?
  • What medicines, if any, are you on?
  • Have you experienced any other symptoms or changes in your body, such as hot flashes, night sweats, or mood swings?

Thanks,

Dr. M.D.Mazumdar,

Aries Obgyn Clinic.

Hi Doctor,

I have skipped a month here or there for past 8 months
The periods have been heavy occasionally earlier but not this heavy and not for 8 days.

I take Losaratan for high BP and an antacid.

As far as changes,  night sweats just started about 4 months ago. I am tired but I work a lot so no more tired than normal. Mood slightly more irritable but normal seasonal mood swings

I am wondering at what point should I go to the ER or seek medical assistance for a period lasting 8+ days very very heavy with major clotting.

Thanks,

Jane.

How large are the clots?  1 cm, 2 cm , 5 cm across? About the size of a tennis ball?

How often do you need  to change your pad or tampon?

The size is larger than any experienced in my life so far. I am bleeding through super tampons and extra absorbant liners every 90 minutes for 8 days no let up

If you  are soaking through two pads or tampons in just one hour for two consecutive hours, you are bleeding too heavily and need to be seen by your doctor as early as possible.

Please go to the ER now – the bleeding could be serious.

If the bleeding is not that heavy but you are feeling tired or weak you need to make an appointment with your Doctor.

I dont feel week.

I read that 10+ heavy day clotting is normal at 52 entering menopause. Is that accurate or should I seek help at ER?

It is fairly common to experience blood clots as long as they aren’t bigger than a quarter in size.

But  if you  soaking through a pad or tampon within a consecutive two-hour timeframe, then you need to be seen at the earliest.

Please go to the ER.

Ok thank you.

I will go to ER.

Thanks,

Jane

That is good.

Please Feel free to reach out if you have further questions.

Thank you for contacting Aries Obgyn Clinic.
